"Most people who know me say that I do things with an unconventional flair," Kayvon says, musing about his career path thus far. "It’s just that I believe in letting things evolve." Evolve they do for this man and his vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, thanks to his undeniable intuition and lifelong passion for helping people.

As a child, Kayvon envisioned a world in which everyone felt nurtured and cared for. That vision eventually led him to medical school, where he thrived for a time, but in the last few months of his education, felt the vague calling of an even larger purpose. Empathy for his patients wouldn’t allow him to treat them with the required objectivity, so in 1998, he took his M.D. degree and moved onward.

Kayvon had worked much of his way through college and post-graduate studies by doing part-time computer related work, even employing seven others on a part-time basis. Excited by the burgeoning field, he raised the bar and simply told himself, "I’m going to become an Internet programmer." He taught himself programming and web design, and had his own e-commerce site - a major accomplishment in the late 90’s - up and running in three weeks; another two followed in the next month. Progressing quickly, by 2001he had held corporate positions as IT Manager, Senior Account Manager and Operations Manager, all the while maintaining freelance work, as well.

By 2003, Kayvon left the corporate world, embracing the limitless freelance opportunities before him. By 2004, out of sheer necessity, he found himself with several employees. He says he looked around one day and realized, "It seems I have to run a business now." Again, following intuition, he dove in head first.

He began attending seminars and reading all of the business-related books he could get his hands on. At the 2004 SOHO Small Business Expo, he found one book that he wouldn’t let go of and it changed his life. Brian Scudamore, Founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK, was speaking and said this: "I understand many of you are sitting here and thinking, what can I learn from a book? Business is about doing stuff not reading ... so here is my answer: if you are going to read only ONE book, read The E-Myth Revisited, Why Most Small Businesses Fail and What to Do About it."

Kayvon took those words to heart, going to the nearest booth, only to be told that their last copy - the display - was not for sale. "I don’t care," he said. "I am going home with that book, even if I have to wait here till the end of the day when all of your visitors are gone." Fortunately for the eager Kayvon, and the lives he’s touched since, they found another copy and let the book go home with him.

At this point, Kayvon barely recognized his venture as a business, and didn’t see himself as an entrepreneur, per se. But he realized he’d gotten his hands on an invaluable tool at the fortuitous start of his trek into the business world. "There are no accidents. Everything happens for a reason," he says, looking back, realizing that the book’s principles helped poise him for success.

Kayvon spent the next year building his business. As fate would have it, the main speaker for the 2005 SOHO Small Business Expo was the Chairman of E-Myth Worldwide and author of E-Myth, Michael Gerber himself. Kayvon decided to take up the offer to participate in Gerber’s new venture, In the Dreaming Room, just in its inception at the time. It’s a forum in which "entrepreneurs can practice a new kind of dreaming--Intentional Dreaming®--which has nothing to do with problem solving and everything to do with transforming your whole life and business in a radically creative and strategic way. The surprising reason that most small businesses fail is not because their dream is too big, but rather too small, too realistic - it isn’t big enough to sustain more life!" www.inthedreamingroom.com

In that 2 ½ day seminar, Kayvon learned to work not just in his business, but on his business. He’s since worked with a business coach, and enjoys his never-ending, entrepreneurial education. "It’s all about the big picture!" he says. "Michael Gerber is now my Strategic Advisor, and my company is creating the business infrastructure of his new company (what a great opportunity!). I am blessed with great, supportive and knowledgeable advisors, friends and co-workers."

As his ventures continue to grow and change, Kayvon sets his sights on helping other entrepreneurs create their own best businesses and best lives. He says, "There’s more than one way to get there, more than one right answer. Half of the fun is just finding your own way!" Colleagues are inspired by his undaunted, generous spirit. Those closest to him tell him they’re awaiting his yet-to-be-written book, saying the cover will feature him in a Frank Sinatra-esque pose with the title, "I Did it My Way."

"I consider myself a student of Entrepreneurship and I am determined to become one of the best," he says. Continually becoming is the essence of Kayvon Khalilzadeh’s success.
